SEC Sports News

alabamaThe Crimson Tide is tinkering on the top of the SEC. During the 2009 season they are sure to be sitting as one of the top teams of the SEC. Here are the notes from this years spring practice.
  • Alabama returns nine starters on its highly-touted defense, which ranked third nationally in total defense (263.5) a year ago and second against the rush (74.14 ypg). The Tide brings back six of their front seven, including all four linebackers. UA also returns 13 of its top 15 tacklers from 2008 with middle linebacker Rolando McClain, who recorded a team-high 95 tackles in 2008, leading the way. Read more...

Jodie MeeksKentucky junior Jodie Meeks will submit his name to the National Basketball Association for its June draft, but will not hire an agent, leaving open the possibility to return to Kentucky next season.

Meeks, a 6-4 guard, led the SEC and ranked eighth in the country in scoring, averaging 23.7 ppg. He set the school record for points in a game (54 at Tennessee) and three-pointers in a season, (117) while also shooting an SEC best 90.2 percent from the free throw line. Alex TyrusSophomore forward Alex Tyus (St. Louis, Mo.) has made the decision to remain with the University of Florida men’s basketball team.

“It’s great to know that his heart is here at the University of Florida,” said head coach Billy Donovan. “I know he will work hard, and I look forward to helping him continue to grow and develop as a person and as a player.”

Tyus originally announced his intentions to transfer on April 17.

“The University of Florida is where I want to be,” said Tyus. “I truly feel this is the best place for me to continue to grow and improve and I look forward to this upcoming season.”

Tyus was the Gators’ second-leading scorer last season, averaging 12.5 points per game, while leading UF in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game, and in blocked shots with 28. He finished tied for the team lead in double-doubles with five.

GatorsBrantley's ready: Any concerns about who would back up Tim Tebow next season were alleviated this spring thanks to the performance of John Brantley. He was the highlight of the spring for the Gators with the way he threw the ball and was good enough that Florida coach Urban Meyer would like to use him some next season in certain situations.

Depth on defense: Not only do the Gators have everybody coming back on defense, but they're getting safety Dorian Munroe back after he missed all of last season with a knee injury. There's not a deeper defensive team in the country, and it's always nice to have a veteran like Brandon Spikes to lean on.

Greedy Gators: Spikes said this offseason was even more intense than the one last year when the Gators were coming off a 9-4 record. The competition this spring was equally intense. As cornerback Joe Haden said, the Gators have already forgotten about what they did in 2008 and want to add another ring to their collection.

SCGarcia's awakening: It was the first time that Stephen Garcia had gone through a spring practice at South Carolina, and he at last looked the part of a starting quarterback. Garcia played with more poise, more maturity and took it upon himself to be a leader on offense. The trick now is taking that approach into the fall against SEC defenses.

Immediate help: The Gamecocks won't have to wait long to see what they have in cornerback Stephon Gilmore, safety DeVonte Holloman and running back Jarvis Giles. All three true freshmen enrolled early and made their presence felt this spring. There's a chance that all three could end up starting at some point next season.

New blood on offense: Steve Spurrier overhauled his offensive coaching staff, and a big emphasis this spring was placed on establishing the right kind of mentality up front in the offensive line and beefing up the running game. Spurrier liked what he saw along those lines with Eric Wolford, the Gamecocks' new running game coordinator and offensive line coach.

Florida?s depth chart: the offensive line What a difference four years makes. The depth problems that were such concerns in years one and two of the Urban Meyer era at Florida have been replaced by an abundance of big, strong offensive linemen who play with attitude. Offensvie line coach Steve Addazio returns three starters from Florida?s national championship team but there is no shortage of talented, willing replacements. Addazio will enter the fall with 17 scholarship offensive linemen and none of them are seniors, which bodes well for the future.

Florida?s depth chart: the receivers There isn?t a proven go-to guy in the bunch, but there is no lack of talent among Florida?s receivers this fall. It is a unique blend of veterans who have been contributors their entire careers and young, fast kids capable of stretching the field that the Gators will send out this season.
